Skyline from the Euromast

Beautiful sunrise skyline photo taken from the Euromast by photographer Klaus Lucas!

The Euromast was erected in Het Park, near the entrance to the Maastunnel, on the occasion of the Floriade in 1960.

Architect Maaskant used the masting of a ship as inspiration for the design. This led to the name Euromast, where mast refers to ship's mast in several languages.

The restaurant was raised to a height of 100 metres in five days by means of jacking. The tower was fitted with a replica of a ship's bridge at a height of 32 metres, giving the public an impression of navigation equipment and a map room.

The building was officially opened by Princess Beatrix on 25 March 1960. The location was strategic; anyone driving to Rotterdam on the then motorways would see the 107-metre-high tower towering above the city in front of them. After the opening, the city continued to grow and the buildings became higher. After a few years, buildings rose above the Euromast, such as the Medical Faculty building on the Westzeedijk in 1968, ten metres higher. In 1970, an 85-metre-high steel structure was placed on the Euromast, the Space Tower, making the Euromast the highest building in Rotterdam again. The tower now had a total height of 185 metres. In 1983, the Space Cabin was put into use, a ring-shaped all-round glazed lift that rotates around the Space Tower and takes visitors to a height of 180 metres. This made the Euromast the highest publicly accessible viewpoint in the Netherlands.

The Euromast was designated a national monument in 2010.
